'To their dismay, Penn and Leff were swiftly dismissed from the project. Then, at Schwarzenegger’s suggestion, Columbia called in Hollywood’s hottest scribe. '(Shane Black)
'*It was a mess. What they'd made was a jarring, random collection of scenes. Shane Black*  '

'Last Action Hero is, charitably, an uneven experience: overblown, tonally chaotic, goofy yet often leaden. Its fantastical premise – a golden ticket that allows young Danny (Austin O’Brien) to physically enter the world of movies – should be magical. But instead of hymning the transportive wonder of cinema, it’s more interested in expensively blowing up action-movie cliches and facilitating a series of star cameos that, despite being fun, chip away at an already slippery premise.'

'You can make the case that different casting choices or different marketing choices would have changed John Carter‘s fate, but as the film existed it’s tough to argue against the notion that, to quote Morpheuswhat happened, happened and could not have happened any other way.'

'While hardly a ruinous debut for a movie with a relatively modest $40 million price tag, Aloha’s box-office haul is considered a disappointment in light of its prestige pedigree.'

  1. Can you change the format of your blog Sabina - this is very difficult to read (background too distracting). We need to have another conversation about your project, as I have some concerns about its feasibility and direction. I think one of the issues is that you are starting from a negative position about your focus films, and the exam board strongly recommends that your focus and focus film concerns something you really enjoy and like, as well as feeling strongly about. If you really want to stick with the idea of film for film's sake, this title really suggests a project which investigates auteur/s who are mavericks - creating works that are more about artistic expression than commercial success, and often extremely good from a critical point of view. This seems to be the opposite of your position really (or the flip side), but would make for a more productive and positive project. Woody Allen might be a possibility here as you said, but you should think of someone whose films you really like. Equally, you could turn the project around and investigate high concept movies and audience appeal, but you really must choose a focus film that you really love and about which there is plenty to analyse and plenty to read. Anyway, have a think about all of this, and we'll talk again this week.
